Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG)What makes massively multiplayer online games different from other games? These games can only be played over the Internet, no LAN option. The servers run constantly, except during patches, so even when you aren't playing, there are thousands of people who are. Some of the more popular titles have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Your starting character has limited abilities, but as you continue playing you build up your skills and eventually have a unique, powerful character capable of great feats. These games also have very strong communities. Most games have an option of forming temporary units, called groups or squads in some games, that adventure together for a few hours or days and share experience. Larger and more permanent organizations are also available, called guilds, clans, or outfits. The organizations are not limited to individual play periods, but persist even when you are not logged in to the game. Members of these types of groups often help out newer players with advice, in game money, or equipment. They also provide excellent coordination for large scale campaigns. ![]() Visit our Discussion Forums to find other gamers in the Pittsburgh area who play the same game as you and to arrange for group gaming sessions. Below are many of the MMOG type games available. Every one has a unique feel and appeals to a different kind of player. Most games require that you buy a full retail package and pay a monthly subscription, though a few are available free to download, and some require only one initial payment to set up an account.
